About Panglao
Panglao Island, located just southwest of Bohol in the Philippines, is renowned for its stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant marine life, making it one of the top tourist destinations in the country. The island is connected to the mainland by two bridges, making it easily accessible for visitors. A third bridge is under construction, but who knows when this one will be finished! Panglao is particularly famous for Alona Beach, a long stretch of white sand lined with resorts, restaurants, and dive shops. The beach is a hub of activity, offering a variety of water sports, from snorkeling and diving to paddleboarding and boat tours. The coral reefs just off the coast are teeming with colorful marine life, making it a paradise for underwater enthusiasts.
Beyond the bustling Alona Beach, Panglao Island offers a more relaxed and authentic experience in its quieter areas, like Poblacion Panglao. Poblacion Panglao is the town center of Panglao Island and offers a glimpse into the local way of life, away from the tourist hotspots. Here, you’ll find a more laid-back atmosphere with traditional Filipino houses, local eateries, and small shops. The town square is often the site of community events and gatherings, reflecting the strong sense of community among the island’s residents. Exploring Poblacion Panglao allows visitors to experience the island’s culture and hospitality in a more intimate setting. In Poblacion you’ll also find the bureau of immigration.
In Poblacion Panglao, one of the main attractions is the St. Augustine Church, an old Spanish-colonial church that stands as a historical landmark in the town. The church, with its simple yet elegant architecture, serves as a place of worship and a reminder of the island’s rich history. Nearby, the Panglao Watchtower, another historical site, offers a glimpse into the island’s past, when it was used as a lookout point to protect against pirates. The area around Poblacion Panglao is also home to several local markets where visitors can buy fresh produce, local delicacies, and handmade crafts, providing a more authentic shopping experience compared to the tourist-oriented shops near Alona Beach.
